MAIDAN SHAHR (PAN militants killed in an explosion in central Maidan Wardak province on Monday, officials said.
The militants wanted to fire missiles into the Sultan Band area of Jaghatu district. One of the missiles exploded prematurely, the governor’s spokesman, Shahidullah Shahid, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
As a result, he said, seven fighters including their commander — Mullah Babar — were killed.
The target was the district headquarters building, the district chief, Raz Mohammad said. However, he said the blast killed eight insurgents, including Babar, a Taliban military commander for the district.
The official said the men were involved in attacks on Afghan and foreign troops and intimidation of locals.
There was no word from the Taliban about the incident.
