The call was made at a gathering held in Lashkargah, the provincial capital, to condemn poppy cultivation in the province.
A large number of tribal elders from across the province and government officials attended the gathering, the governor’s office said in a statement.
Participants said growing poppies were un-Islamic and against the country’s constitution. The gathering appealed to farmers to avoid growing the illicit plant on their fields and instead switch to food crops.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Mohammad Gulab Mangal promised the counter-narcotic campaign would be further intensified in the province.
He said the security situation had improved and poppies grown over vast lands eradicated.
