KABUL): A primary court in Kabul on Monday sentenced a man to death and seven years in jail in a double murder and rape case.
Prosecutor Syed Musa told the court the accused, Hussain Ali, had killed a woman and a girl in September this year.
Hailing from central Bamyan province, Ali broke into the victims’ house in the Dasht-i-Barchi and killed Masuma with a pistol and stole 700,000 afghanis ($14,356) and some jewellery.
Two days later, the prosecutor said, Ali strangulated another girl, Zamira, 17, after sexually abusing her. Ali’s wife was not at home at the time of the incident, he said.
He said Ali had previously been sentenced to three years in jail on robbery charges, but he escaped after spending 20 months in prison.
Defence lawyer, Amanullah Marwat, said Ali was not at his home when the girl was found dead there. He also denied his client stole jewellery or money.
Ali rejected the charge of killing Zamira, saying the girl’s step-mother had implicated him in the case. However, he did not comment on Masuma’s murder.
Judge Safiullah Mujaddedi, after listening to arguments from the prosecutor, Ali and his lawyer, sentenced the accused to seven years in prison in the first case and awarded him capital punishment in the second.
