KABUL): Newly-constructed building for the provincial National Disaster Management Department was inaugurated in western Herat province.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Afghanisatan Nature Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA, General Director, Dr. Mohammad Daim Kakar, Herat Deputy Governor, Asiludddin Jami, Head of the Emergency Programme of the Italian Cooperation Office in Herat, Filippo Chiabrera, the ANDMA head in Herat, Abdul Hamid Mubariz, and a number of other important guests.
Construction of the new ANDMA provincial office that started in March was completed in December by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) with support from the Government of the Italian Republic.
“The project supports capacity building and provincial outreach efforts of the government of Afghanistan, particularly ANDMA, in managing natural disaster prevention, preparedness and response with a view towards alleviating the pressing humanitarian needs of the Afghan people,” the UNOPS said in a statement.
Besides the construction of the new office, it said, activities were also carried out in the areas of information management, disaster management strategy development at provincial and district levels, training and skill development, infrastructure assistance and community-based implementation of risk reduction pilot projects.
The project targeted the western provinces of Herat, Farah and Badghis with a special focus on vulnerable communities, the statement said.
“To date, many government entities, schools, bridges and streets were built and handed over to the Afghan government,” it said.
The UNOPS Afghanistan office has been providing procurement and technical support to the government of Afghanistan for the country’s reconstruction.
