NANGARHAR: A senior private security guard was shot dead by unidentified assailants in the Kot district of eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Saturday.

The man led a squad of private guards providing security for a road construction company in the district, the town’s administrative head, Qasim Khan, told Pajhwok Afghan News. He identified the victim as Mirwais, who came under attack while travelling in the Janjali area of Khoargi.

Tribesmen were able to capture one of the assailants, the district chief said. Fazal Rabi Walizai, the public works director, said Mirwais was killed in the Ahmadkhel area, where the construction company worked on a US-funded road between Kot and Haska Mina districts.

A two-kilometre portion of the 20-kilometre road is being asphalted. “Work on the road would continue despite the killing,” he said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the murder.
