HERAT CITY (PAN): Over 200 tonnes of poor-quality petrol imported from Iran was seized in western Herat province, officials said on Sunday.

The seizure involving six fuel tankers were detected in border town of Islam Qala, Fuel and Gas Director Khesro Abdullah told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said cases against three domestic companies that imported the fuel had been referred to the attorney office.

The Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) head for the province, Khalil Yarmand, promised strict action against the importing companies. Under ACCI policy, traders, are required to ensure the quality of imports.

Yarmand said a commission involving representatives from ACCI, the attorney office, the governor’s house and gas department would check the quality of the fuel.

While urging stern action against the importers of low-quality fuel, he asked the Afghan embassies in Iran and Turkmenistan to supervise the quality of imports into the landlocked country.
