KABUL): In a daring jailbreak, three inmates escaped from the main prison in central Maidan Wardak province Friday morning, a top police official said.
Five inmates tried to flee through the main gate of the Maidan Shahr Central Jail at about 7am, but prison guards managed to catch two of them, the provincial police chief said.
Brig. Gen. Abdul Qayyum Baqizoy told Pajhwok Afghan News neither the prisoners had broken any wall of the detention facility nor the Taliban had played any role in the incident.
Police were trying to re-arrest the escapees, all local residents, he said, hoping their efforts would come to fruition sooner rather than later.
At the same time, the police chief added, they had launched an investigation into the jailbreak. He would not say anything about cases against the escaping men.
