Bob Rae, the leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, on Wednesday sent a nomination letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee. “Malala ought to be formally recognized for her exceptional work standing up for the most fundamental of human rights –women,” Rae wrote.
“She has become an integral figure in the movement to stem the tide of extremism and to promote peace and equal opportunity, beginning with the most basic rights such as education,” he said.
Malala, 14, was shot in the head by the Taliban on Oct 9 as she was riding home on a school bus. She was later transferred to England where she is reported in stable condition at a London hospital
The attack won her an outpouring of sympathy around the world, including in Afghanistan, where school girls and boys held prayers for her recovery. The 2012 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the European Union.
