KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): The medical faculty of Kandahar University was closed by students on Thursday after a failed armed fellow forced the faculty dean to sign his documents under duress.
The dean, Dr. Wali Mohammad Weyar, identified the failing student as Hamidullah, a resident of neighbouring Helmand province.
Weyar alleged the student had brought some documents signed by the higher education minister and others recommending him to be passed. Hamidullah threatened him with death if he refused to sign the papers, the dean said.
The incident provoked other medical students to close the faculty in protest, said Weyar, who explained under the rules, the failed student had to reappear in exam.
The protesting students said since no proper security arrangements had been put in place on the campus to protect teachers, they closed the faculty to avoid any untoward incident.
Police manning the university entrance said each student entering the campus was being searched.
Deputy police chief Col. Rahmatullah called the incident a personal matter between the student and the dean, saying still they had launched a probe.
