LASHKARGAH (PAN): Residents of the Khanshin district of southern Helmand province on Wednesday blasted the government for failing to execute development projects in the town after taking its control from rebels four years ago.
Ninety percent of security for the district, which shares a long border with Pakistan, is still being maintained by residents, according to noted tribal elder, Haji Abdul Salam.
He told Pajhwok Afghan News over the past decade, no reconstruction project had been implemented in the district, whose dwellers were faced with a whole host of problems.
As a result of the government’s neglect, the local economy had been retarded and growing gap between residents and the authorities was widening, the elder added.
Three buildings for schools and a health sector.
Shah Mohammad Mir, the district’s administrative head, confirmed the problems facing the people. He said many residents were jobless and their lands had gone barren.
Police chief, Col. Abdul Nabi Ilham who visited the town, said they were trying to forge closer relations between the people and police. He claimed security had improved in Khanshin despite the small number of police deployed to the town.
