KABUL’s restive northwestern tribal region of Waziristan on Wednesday afternoon, his former colleague said.
Malik Mumtaz, who worked for a couple of private TV channels, was gunned down by unidentified assailants on his way home in the Chashma Pul area of Miranshah.
The killers of Malik, formerly a reporter with Khyber News and Geo TV, managed to escape, Khyber News reporter in Kabul Mohammad Rafiq told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Currently associated as a correspondent with The News, Mumtaz was also president of the local press club and had reported on the area for more than 20 years.
Mehboob Afridi, the secretary general of the Tribal Union of Journalists, confirmed and condemned his killing. “Mumtaz was traveling towards Chashma Pul when the attackers fired on his vehicle.”
Another journalist, named Hayatullah, was killed some years back in North Waziristan, home to local and foreign militants. Last year, a dozen media workers were killed in Pakistan, according to the US-based Committee to Protect Journalists.
