GHAZNI CITY (PAN): Seventeen members of the Afghan Local Police (ALP) were killed and two others apparebtly abducted by the militants in the Andar district of southern Ghazni province, officials said on Wednesday.

The security personnel, manning a check-post in the town, were shot dead after being poisoned by armed rebels, ALP chief Alishah Ahmadzai, told Pajhwok Afghan News. At least one policeman was injured.

He believed the incident might be the result of insurgents’ infiltration into police ranks. More details would be disclosed once an investigation into the incident was completed, Alishah said, adding seven of the dead had recently joined the ALP.

Provincial council deputy head, Abdul Jami Jam,i said the incident took place in the Habib Godal area of the town on Tuesday night.

The victims were poisoned before being shot to death, he said, adding their weapons and ammunitions had been snatched by the Taliban.

The insurgents claimed responsibility for the incident, with the group’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, saying the fighters had captured the ALP checkpoint, killing the 19 policemen guarding it.
