HERAT CITY (PAN): Residents of western Herat province on Saturday demanded implementation of death sentences handed down to kidnappers.
Residents issued the call came at a meeting, attended by about 20,000 people, in front of the governor’s house in Herat City — the provincial capital.
The participants said the capital punishment awarded to the kidnappers, particularly the abductor and killer of an 8-year-old child, Ali Sina, be enforced forthwith.
Herat Industrialists’ Union Association head Abdullah Khadim, who organised the public gathering, told Pajhwok Afghan News they wanted to draw the government’s attention to the safety of citizens and an end to kidnaps.
A son of local trader Mohammad Nasir, the child was killed after being abducted three weeks back. Eight of the 10 suspects have been detained for complicity in the incident.
Two of the detainees have been sentenced to death and the rest imprisoned up to 20 years in jail. Holding the victim’s photographs, the participants called for the early enforcement of the court’s verdict.
But Primary Court Judge Ghulam Rasul said the accused reserved the right to defence. The judgment would be implemented, if upheld by the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court, he explained.
