KABUL (PAN): The US military ceded full control of its main detention facility to Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defence in central Parwan province on Monday, ending a bitter row between the allies.
At a long-awaited transition ceremony, the top US and NATO military commander in Afghanistan said: “The transfer of the detention facility is an important part of the overall transition of security lead to Afghan forces.”
Gen. Joseph F. Dunford said the ceremony highlighted an increasingly confident, capable and sovereign Afghanistan, which has renamed the prison as the Afghan National Detention Facility at Parwan (ANDF-P).
In January, President Hamid Karzai and his US counterpart Obama had agreed to transfer the detainees to Afghan custody.
