KABUL’s top 10 figures in the human rights revolution.
In the preface to her book Justice, she presents portraits of the world’s leaders and praised the work of Nader Nadery, chairman of the Fair and Free Election Foundation of Afghanistan (FEFA).
The 38-year-old Afghan, who preferred to walk alone, told Cook he had been accompanied by bodyguards for 15 years. “Now and then, I can’t stand it anymore and I escape them in a crowd.”
Nadery told the photographer: “They get very upset with me when I do that.” Cook said she wanted to know why he was the only one of his nine siblings who had not left Afghanistan.
She went on to ask: “Why does he choose to remain at risk with his wife and young child? His brothers and sisters grew up with the same parents in the same period of history in the same country. What is it that makes him stay and fight?”
On the Artbook blog, she eulogised the services of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Russian activist Ludmilla Alexeeva, Burmese opposition politician Aung Suu Kyi, ex-US President Jimmy Carter and others.
