KABUL): President Hamid Karzai has discussed a number of issues of bilateral interest with his Estonian counterpart Toomas Hendrik Ilves, the Presidential Palace in Kabul said on Wednesday.

The Afghan-led reconciliation process, the ongoing security transition, next year’s presidential elections and economic cooperation between the two countries figured at the meeting in Tallinn.

On his maiden two-day trip to Estonia, Karzai thanked Ilves for inviting him to visit the country and said: “We desire continued and expanded cooperation with Estonia in different areas.”

He praised Tallinn for granting scholarships to young Afghan diplomats, currently studying in the friendly country. Karzai also urged his interlocutor to cooperate with his administration in training and equipping Afghan security forces.
While referring to the investment opportunities offered by his government, the president encouraged Estonian entrepreneurs to invest in Afghanistan and Turkey.”

Estonians businessmen would benefit from their investment on the one hand and help the ailing Afghans avoid going abroad for treatment on the other, the president remarked.

Satisfied with the current state of bilateral ties, Ilves said: “Estonia is currently cooperating with the computer science faculty of the Kabul University and wants to share its information technology experience with Afghanistan.”

Karzai also met Prime Minister Andrus Ansip and Speaker of Parliament Ene Ergma. The talks were focused on the bilateral relationship and the post-2014 situation in Afghanistan.
