LASHKARGAH (PAN.
The visiting British dignitary held out the assurance at a meeting with Helmand Governor Mohammad Naeem at the Provincial Reconstruction) office in Lashkargah.
Omar Zwak, the gubernatorial spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News Naeem urged Cameron to help train Afghan security forces in addition to development assistance.
He said the governor also sought Britain’s help for the expansion of the Bust airport to facilitate the landing and takeoff of large aircraft at the facility. The airport expansion will go a long way in promoting fruit exports from the province.
In response to the governor’s demand, Cameron said the UK would continue to assist Afghanistan, particularly Helmand, even after the pullout of British troops in 2014.
The British government would prioritise training and equipping Afghan forces to enable them to deal with security challenges post 2014, Cameron added.
He visited British troops at Camp Bastion before departing for Kabul, where he will hold talks with President Hamid Karzai. Later in the day, he will fly to Islamabad.
