The party chief for rge eastern zone, Abdul Rahim Saraf, told Pajhwok Afghan News the assistance followed a fund-raising campaign for purchasing food items for the poor households.
He said the items included flour, ghee, sugar, rice, beans, tea, dates and drinks. The party conducted such campaigns every Ramadan in a bid to promote charity and philanthrophy.
Deputy Governor Mohammad Hanif Gardiwal praised the Jamiat-i-Islah party for its efforts to help the destitute, urging civil society groups to launch similar campaigns.
A resident of Jalalabad, the provincial capital, Abdul Rahim, who received food assistance, said there were many other families that were in dire need of help. He urged well-off people to follow in the Jamiat-i-Islah footsteps and assist the poor during the holy month.
