JALALABAD (PAN): Tens of shops were gutted on Sunday as a result of a blaze at an underground market in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, witnesses said.
A shopkeeper, Asadullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News the fire erupted around 9am, damaging more than one hundred shops in the market.
Soon afterwards, firefighters arrived and controlled the blaze to some extent, he said, adding the cause of the incident and the scale of damage were not yet known.
Samiullah, another shopkeeper, said many were still taking their merchandise out of their shops and the blaze was yet to be put out. If not extinguished soon, the fire might spread to carpet shops in the market, he feared.
