ISLAMABAD (PAN detainees to help advance the reconciliation process in the neighbouring country, an official said on Thursday.
“Pakistan government, Afghan authorities and the US are in consultations on the release of these detainees,” said Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry in Islamabad, when asked about any contact with Kabul and Washington over further releases.
Pakistan has already released about 33 detainees since last year and has decided “in principle” to release prominent Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Baradar at an “appropriate time”.
Chaudhry told a weekly press briefing Pakistan released the 33 Taliban detainees with the objective to contribute to Afghan reconciliation process and to allow these elements to join the mainstream reconciliation process.
He Pakistan believed the Afghan peace process would succeed only when all the stakeholders were able to participate in i.
Pakistan would not interfere in the internal matters of Afghanistan and would extend all support and assistance to make the reconciliation drive a success, he said.
