KABUL) on Saturday voiced its preparedness to send mobile voter registration teams to remote areas of the country.

Previously, people from far-flung regions had complained they could not travel for hundreds of kilometres to district centers or provincial capitals for getting voter cards.

In order to address the problem, the commission said, it had created mobile teams to start the registration process in inaccessible areas.

IEC spokesman Noor Mohammad Noor told Pajhwok Afghan News the teams would focus on areas whose residents, especially women, were unable to go to district centres to get voter cards.

More than 1.5 million people, 30 percent of them women, have been issued with voter cards so far. “We give an opportunity to people of remote areas and will send the teams close to deliver the cards during the remaining one month and half.”

Noor stressed they were ready to afford the women greater opportunities to get voter cards, because the current percentage of their participation in the process was far from adequate.
