HERAT CITY (PAN): Representatives from 30 countries arrived in the capital of western Herat province to attend a two-day conference on regional security that began on Saturday.

An initiative of the Afghanistan Institute for Strategic Studies (AISS), the conference is taking place in the historic palace of Ikhtiyaruddin in Herat City.

Representatives from central Asian countries, India, China, Iran, Egypt, Germany and the US had arrived to confer on the security situation in Afghanistan and the region, said AISS chairman Dr. Mohammad Daud Muradyan.

On the day one, he said the participants agreed to push for trilateral meetings between Afghanistan, Iran and the US to remove misunderstandings about the Bilateral Security Agreement between Kabul and Washington.

“The whole world has been facing the threat of terrorism which should be eliminated,” presidential advisor on national security, Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta told the conference.

In his remarks, Spanta said the networks of Chechen, Arab, Pakistani and Afghan Taliban fighters remained a big challenge that threatened security around the globe.

According to AISS, Pakistani representatives were invited to the conference, but they did not come for unknown reasons.
