KABUL Twenty20 Qualifiers by defeating Papua New Guinea (PNG) in a rain-reduced encounter in the UAE, an official said on Sunday.
PNG, after winning the toss, chose to bat in the 20 overs game in Sharjah and managed to score 168 runs for the loss of six wickets, said Farid Hotak, the Afghanistan Cricket Board spokesman.
Samiullah Shinwari claimed three wickets, Daulat Zadran two and Shahpur Zadran one. As a heavy rain began after the PNG innings, umpires decided to set Afghanistan a target of 69 runs seven overs, which they achieved in the last over for the loss of four wickets.
A day earlier, Afghanistan defeated Scotland in a previous match that came a day after they were thrashed by Holland. Ireland, Namibia and Holland also won today’s matches.
Afghanistan are placed together with the Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Kenya, Scotland and Bermuda in Group B of the qualifiers that began on Friday.
Similarly, Ireland, Canada, the UAE, Namibia, Hong Kong, Uganda, the USA and Italy make up Group A. The top six teams of the qualifiers will secure berth in the finals to be held in March next year in Bangladesh.
