GARDEZ (PAN organisations and youth on Tuesday asked the government to help resolve a land dispute between Zazai and Mangal tribes in southeastern Paktia province.
On Monday, a dispute over the ownership over a piece of land sparked an armed clash between the two tribes, leaving five houses burnt.
Dr. Mohammad Naeem, the Awukhtoon Cultural Association head, told Pajhwok Afghan News the government should find a durable solution to the long-standing dispute.
Foreign hand in fomenting trouble could not be ruled out because some elements did not want the tribes to coexist peacefully, he alleged.
Syed Jamaluddin Asifkhel, the Loya Paktia Cultural Association chief, said such of fighting would leave a negative impact on people’s lives and pave the way for more clashes.
Civil society groups and youth would not allow the tribes to live in a state of animosity, he resolved, promising the use all possible means to settle the issue.
Deputy Governor Abdul Wali Sahi said fighting had ceased and the area was under the control of Afghan security forces. Local officials, parliamentarians and tribal elders had started negotiations to address the issue, he added.
“It is a very small piece of land. Tribal elders can easily resolve it but some elements do not want both tribes to co-exist peacefully,” he noted.
