KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Residents of the Daman district of southern Kandahar province on Tuesday held a protest against the municipality’s installation of garbage bins in front of their houses.
A resident of Ghaibi area said the municipality collected garbage and dumped it close to homes, creating health hazards for the people. The protesters blocked the road that municipality officials were using for garbage transportation.
One protestor Haji Nani told Pajhwok Afghan News the municipality had created serious health problems for 200 families living in the area. “We will not allow stinking garbage bins around our houses.”
Elders asked the municipality to install waste bins away from residential areas. Ainuddin, another resident, complained their children and women were infected with various skin diseases.
“Some days back, we urged the media to highlight our legitimate problem but to no avail. We are forced to stage the protest to get our problems resolved,” he said.
The trashes had polluted the environment and created health hazards. “We will continue our protests until our problem are resolved,” he said.
But Kandahar Mayor Mohammad Omar said the baskets had been installed under a plan approved by the government. The departments concerned buried trash and sprayed it with anti chemicals, he concluded.
