MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Dozens of businessmen from neighbouring Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan on Tuesday joined their Afghan colleagues in the capital of northern Balkh province at a day-long conference on improving trade relations.
Around 40 traders from the three central Asian nations attended the event in Mazar-i-Sharif and discussed how to improve access to each other’s markets, imports and exports and facilities for traders in their respective countries.
Balkh Chamber of Commerce head Arsh Yunus told Pajhwok it was the largest ever conference taking place among traders from the three countries.
He said Kazakh and Uzbek traders wanted to invest in Afghanistan and the conference was aimed at discussing how to pave the ground for that purpose.
The trader representative said such conferences had been beneficial in finding market for goods produced in Afghanistan.
A follow-up conference will be organised two months later in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, he said, adding many countries had expressed their desire to increase trade relations with Balkh province.
He said trade activity in the province increased by 20 percent this year, but complained the lack of electricity remained the main hurdle to commercial growth.
