KABUL militants have been sneaking into southern Helmand province to assist their Afghan comrades in the fight against government forces.
Gen. Mohammad Naeem was addressing a meeting involving military and civil officers from neighbouring Kandahar and central Uruzgan provinces at the Shorab Military Centre a day earlier.
According to his spokesman, Omar Zwak, the meeting was attended by the 205th Attal Military Corps commander, senior military officials, governors of Kandahar and Uruzgan, police chiefs and representatives of foreign forces.
Naeem said Helmand, Kandahar and Uruzgan shared borders with Pakistan and most of militants involved in terrorist activities came from the neighbouring country.
He said a decisive and comprehensive military operation in the border region could help prevent militants from sneaking into Afghanistan.
Kandahar police chief Col. Abdur Razzaq suggested increased security measures on the border between Kandahar and Pakistan.
His Uruzgan counterpart Gen. Mattiullah Khan said the security situation in the central province was linked to the situation in Helmand. “If security measures are tightened in Helmand, the situation in Uruzgan will automatically improve,” he believed.
Kandahar governor Tooryalai Weesa told the meeting his administration had been cooperating with all security organs in counterinsurgency efforts, saying most insecure areas had lately cleared of militants.
