WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): The United States wanted to maintain its counterterrorism capabilities in Afghanistan as it does not want Al Qaeda to regenerate, a senior administration official said on Wednesday, acknowledging that the group still posed a threat.
“The threat from Al Qaeda’s core leadership in Afghanistan and Pakistan. That does not mean that there are no traces of Al Qaeda,” he said.
Of course, he added, threats continued emanating from Afghanistan and Pakistan. But Washington believed its forces had struck significant blows against Al Qaeda’s leadership, the official continued.
The US wanted to maintain a counterterrorism capability precisely because it did not want al Qaeda to regenerate, the source said, explaining that American military operations in the region would continue. The Americans will also continue to train Afghan forces to help ward off the threat.
“So I think people should know that in working with Afghanistan and Pakistan, we are going to continue to be vigilant and we’re going to continue to carry out, as necessary, counterterrorism operations if al Qaeda seeks to reemerge,” the official said.
