KABUL Secretary General Fogh Rasmussen on Saturday congratulated the Afghan people on the successful second round of the presidential election.
“Today is another historic day for Afghanistan. I congratulate the millions of Afghans from across the country who cast their votes in the final round of presidential elections,” he said.
In a statement, the NATO chief said the Afghan men and women had once again shown their determination to have a say in their country’s future.
The Afghan security forces and institutions had done an outstanding job despite the challenges, planning and leading all security operations before and during the run-off, he added.
“I commend the Afghan people for their commitment to democracy, and the Afghan security forces and institutions for their continued dedication and professionalism in securing the electoral process.
“It is essential for the future of Afghanistan that the election process is now brought to its formal conclusion in a credible, transparent and inclusive way,” he stressed.
Rasmussen urged all stakeholders to play a constructive role in this respect. Allegations of electoral irregularities should be addressed through the established institutional mechanisms, he said.
