LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Defence Minister Bismaillah Mohammadi on Thursday said he would send more troops and weapons to Sangin district of southern Helmand province to tackle security related problems in the volatile district.
Mohammadi, who arrived in the restive district on Saturday, was speaking to media-people after holding a series of meetings with provincial officials.
The purpose of his visit to Sangin was to assess the security situation and meet Afghan security forces, he said, acknowledging that militants remained in control of some areas but the fighting had slowed down there.
He said plans were underway to ensure security of all Helmand districts specifically the Sangin district through a decisive military offensive.
Afghan security forces and militants are locked in intense gun battle since last two weeks in which dozens of people from both sides have been killed and injured.
