KABUL (Pajhwok): Leading in the preliminary result, Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai on Tuesday hoped the final outcome would be unveiled on schedule in accordance with the relevant law.
In the preliminary results, Ahmadzai secured a total of 4485888 votes — or 56.4 percent — while Abdullah got 3461639 ballots — or 43.6 percent in the second round.
Originally, the preliminary results were to be announced on July 2, but the announcement was delayed due to a reassessment of ballots papers from 1,930 polling stations.
Speaking to journalists in Kabul, the ex-World Bank economist suggested suspected ballots be investigated by the IECC to ensure the integrity and transparency of the election.
A former finance minister, Ahmadzai said he did not believe in politics of threats and coercion and that was why his team prioritised political negotiations to address problems.
In order to resolve the current impasse over the election result, which his rival Dr. Abdullah has rejected, Ahmadzai said the two sides should sit across the negotiating table.
He identified political stability as a priority, pledging his team would provide clean governance and work diligently to eradicate the scourge of corruption from Afghanistan.
The renowned economist praised Abdullah as a respected national figure and hoped he would resist calls for the formation of a parallel government. His opponent would support efforts for stability, he concluded.
