KABUL Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT) in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad.
Since last three weeks, protests against government were underway leading by PTI Chief Imran Khan and PAT leader Tahir-ul-Qadri and both have been demanding “freedom” and “revolution” respectively.
The demonstrators have been demanding the sitting Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to step down, alleging him of massive rigging in the election that saw Sharif secured sweeping majority in the parliament.
After overnight clashes, demonstrators started regroup on Sunday and clashed with police as thousands of protesters marched toward the prime minister’s house late Saturday after talks mediated by the army with government failed to end the deadlock.
On Sunday sporadic clashes were continuing between police and some demonstrators. Many protesters were armed with batons.
A source in the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospitals confirmed receiving over 450 wounded included dozens of women and a handful of children. In addition, as many as 79 policemen were among those wounded.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif vowed to stay on as prime minister. The protest leaders have drawn thousands to the streets of Islamabad, but their call has not mobilized mass support.
