GHAZNI CITY/ MEHTARLAM (Pajhwok): In a pre-dawn attack, militants gunned down a leading tribal elder in the Maqur district of southern Ghazni province on Tuesday, the governors’ spokesman said.
Shafiq Nang told Pajhwok Afghan News that tribal leader Ainuddin was on his way home from the mosque after offering Fajr prayers when masked gunmen sprayed him with bullets in Mirzakhel village.
Ainuddin was also the district development association head. A statement from the Maqur district chief said the slain elder had played an effective role in dispute resolution in the area.
Separately, five policemen were killed in a landmine blast and insurgent attack on a police check post in the Padbosh district of eastern Laghman province.
A statement from the governor’s office said the bombing occurred in Andesha area. Several fighters were also killed and wounded in retaliatory fire from the security personnel.
