KABUL (Pajhwok): Hundreds of Dr. Abdullah’s supporters on Friday took to the streets in the central capital against what they called massive fraud in the mid-June runoff elections.
The protestors, who walked from the Shahr-i-Naw Park and assembled in front of the UNAMA office, accused the United States, Britain and the world body of conniving at the election rigging.
Chanting full-throated slogans against UNAMA head Jan Kubis, President Hamid Karzai and the Independent Election Commission, they alleged their mandate had been stolen.
One of the protestors told Pajhwok Afghan News their rally was aimed to draw the UN’s attention to the leadership of Kubis and America’s role in influencing the election.
Shafiq Sharq claimed the secretary-general’s special representative and the US had failed to demonstrate their neutrality in the elections. Instead they had sided with fraudsters, he maintained.
“We expected the Americans would work for promoting participatory democracy in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, they have acted against all democratic norms,” he lamented.
He said the Afghans were grateful to the US for its generous assistance, but they would not allow anyone to play with their destiny.
Abdullah Khuda Da, another demonstrator, alleged: “Both Kubis and the US have aided the people involved in electoral irregularities…This is unacceptable to us.”
