Sardar Daud, founder of the democratic system and the first elected president of Afghanistan, was born in July 1909 in Kabul. After 5-year rule, he was killed along with 16 family members in a coup on April 27, 1978.
He had overthrown the monarchy of Mohammad Zahir Shah in 1973 to establish Afghanistan as a republic. He served as the country’s president from 1973 to 1978, deeply influencing Afghan politics.
In remembrance of the ex-president, Jirga-i-Fikro Amal members arranged Qurankhwani at his tomb. Former Helmand governor and jirga member Gulab Mangal said they wanted to pay a tribute to the visionary leader.
“It is the duty of every Afghan to remember their heroes and implement their programs, political vision for the prosperity of the country,” said Mangal, who denounced the recent killing of a young man and injuries to several people at a similar event.
