KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations has welcomed the completion of the nationwide audit of the ballots cast in the June 14 presidential elections.
At a meeting yesterday, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) completed findings from audited ballot boxes. The audit exercise lasted almost two months.
According to their respective mandates and responsibilities, the relevant electoral institutions will hear complaints regarding the audit findings and announce the final result.
“Today’s decisions mark the end of the supervisory role over the IEC-conducted audit which the two candidates requested the United Nations to play,” said UN’s Senior Adviser to IEC Richard Chambers.
“This particular role of the UN is over,” he added, as the world body thanked the IEC, the international and Afghan observer organisations and diplomatic missions which contributed monitors to enhance the transparency of the exercise.
