PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): A nine-member group of armed robbers was detained after a clash with police in the Baghlan-i-Markazi district of northern Baghlan province, an official said on Tuesday.
Provincial police spokesman Javed Basharat told Pajhwok Afghan News the robbers were arrested after the clash that lasted three hours in the Laqa area on Wednesday night.
The group leader Farjam Islamuddin was injured during the firefight, he said, accusing the detainees of involvement in kidnappings, robberies, murders and planting bombs.
About a month ago, a civilian and a policeman were injured in a bomb blast in Chahar Shanba Tapa area. The detainees had planted the bomb, the police official said, adding the gang had killed an Afghan Local Police (ALP) member.
A resident of the area, Abdul Karim, said that Islamuddin was involved in criminal activities, including torturing locals.
“We could not get out of our houses during night because Islamuddin and his men would stop people on their way and would rob them of money,” he said.
