KABUL (Pajhwok): Pakistani authorities deported 78 Afghan citizens via the Torkham border crossing and handed them over to Afghan security forces, reports said on Friday.
The Afghans had been arrested in various parts of Peshawar, the capital of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province for living there without illegal stay documents, the Pakistani media said.
The detained Afghans were deported via Torkham on Thursday. Pakistan has called on the international community to assist the Afghan government in ensuring a dignified repatriation of its citizens from Pakistan.
Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, Massoud Khan, told a UN meeting that the government of Afghanistan should provide homes to returning Afghans.
“We want the Afghan refugees to return to their home country with respect,” he said.
Nearly 1.5 million Afghans continue to stay in neighbouring Pakistan.
