OSLO (Pajhwok): A conference on women was held in Norway on Sunday on advancing Women’s Rights and Empowerment in Afghanistan.
A statement from the Norway Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Oslo Symposium was organised in close cooperation with the Afghan and US authorities and civil society organisations.
Rula Ghani, Afghanistan’s new first lady, was among those attending the symposium. Ms Ghani advises on issues relating to women, children and internally displaced people in Afghanistan.
Together with Prime Minister Erna Solberg, Ms Ghani took part in the opening of the symposium.
Professor Husn Banu Ghazanfar, Afghanistan’s Minister of Women’s Affairs, and a number of Afghan members of parliament and activists were in Norway to attend the symposium.
The purpose of the symposium is to provide an arena for discussing how Afghanistan can advance women’s rights and empowerment, as well as how the international community can support the necessary reforms.
