NIELI (PAJHWOK): People are facing a food shortage in central Daikundi province, the director of agriculture warned on Monday.
Eng. Mahdi Mowahid told Pajhwok though wheat yield had increase to 29,000 tonnes by 10 percent last year, yet the local population needed 27,000 tonnes.
The Ministry of Agriculture distributed 110 tonnes of refined wheat seed to more than 2,000 farmers across Daikundi.
Farmer Mohammad Abbas said he had got the same kind of seed last year as well. “It produced better results than other varieties.
Khuda-i-Dad, another grower, said his wheat harvest had risen by 20 percent over the previous year because of refined seed cultivation.
“We can buy refined seeds and chemical fertiliser from the market, but the Agriculture Department’s farm inputs are better,” he observed.
