WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): US President Barack Obama is hopeful his Afghan strategy would work in its current form, the White House said on Wednesday even as his nominee for defence secretary said he would recommend changes if the situation in Afghanistan deteriorated.
“President has been very clear about what he believes our strategy should be. It’s impossible to predict with 100 percent certainty exactly what security conditions are going to be, but the president is committed to this strategy,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said.
He told his daily news conference the president continued to support a responsible end to the war in Afghanistan and to reduce the military footprint there. Obama had laid out a clear strategy and was hopeful about its effectiveness, Earnest said.
At his confirmation hearing, Obama’s defence secretary nominee said the campaign in Afghanistan had been close to his heart for all the time that he had been associated with the Department of Defence. If confirmed, the secretary might recommend changes to the drawdown plan.
