JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Provincial council (PC) members and tribal elders, paying tribute to former Nangarhar governor Mualvi Attaullah Ludin, on Sunday urged the central government to appoint an honest and clean person as his successor.

At a gathering in Jalalabad, the elders and public representatives honoured Ludin, who resigned on March 21, citing challenges in dealing with corruption, weaknesses in administrative affairs and his status as acting governor.

Deputy provincial council head Dr. Nasir Kamawal said Ludin had been performing his job well, but lacked central government’s support. “We ask the central government to send us a committed person as new governor.”

He added some individuals were being considered to replace Ludin, but they had no professional background. However, he did not name anyone. “We urge the president not to name any of them as governor.”

PC member Zabihullah Zmarai told Pajhwok Afghan News only a capable governor could deal with administrative corruption and insecurity in Nangarhar.

A tribal elder and member of the peace committee, Maulvi Tahir Haqqani, said the ex-governor had tried his best to banish corruption, but the government had not been cooperative with him.

A number of religious scholars, members of the Hezb-i-Islami, officials and tribal elders attended the gathering, but Ludin was not present.
