KABUL (Pajhwok): The 14th death anniversary of Afghan national hero Ahmad Shah Massoud was marked on Wednesday, with laying of floral wreaths on his grave and a monument in Kabul.
A ceremony, attended by Deputy Chief Executive Officer Eng. Mohammad Khan, Special Representative on Reform and Governance Ahmad Zia Massoud, was held at the Massoud Square here.
Interior Minister Noor-ul-Haq Ulumi, Defence Minister Masoom Stanikzai, Chief Justice Syed Yousuf Haleem, Wolesi Jirga Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi and Chief of Army Staff Qadam Shah Shaheem were also present.
Cabinet ministers, members of parliament, former jihadi commanders, security officials and diplomats also took part in the event. Several dignitaries placed flowers at the site to pay tribute to Massoud.
Massoud was a hero who fought against all invaders until his last breath, his brother Ahmad Zia Massoud told reporters at the ceremony.
Massoud was killed by two Arab attackers, posing as journalists, in Takhar province on September 9, 2001, two days before the 9/11 attacks. Taliban and Al Qaeda were blamed for his assassination.
“Massoud was the hero of two main wars against Russians and Pakistanis,” his brother said, hoping the nation would continue to recognise his services for a long time to come.
