KABUL burning incident at the Bagram airbase and called foreign troops’ presence an insult to Islam.
The alleged sacrilege by US troops in central Parwan province last week sparked violent nationwide protests, leaving more than 30 people, including US soldiers, dead and 270 others wounded.
“It’s not for the first time that foreigners had desecrated the Quran,” Eng. Ahmad Shah Ahmadzai, the Front chairman, told a gathering in Kabul. “As long as foreign troops remain in Afghanistan, peace will elude the country,” he warned. He asked the Afghan people and government to defend their religion.
The Quran burning amounted to declaration of war on humanity as the book belonged to entire mankind, said Syed Mohammad Hadi, another speaker, who urged President Karzai to respect people’s sentiments.
Haji Farid, a former MP from central Kapisa province, said several empires had invaded Afghanistan in the past, but none of them dared to disrespect Islam. Hadi sought harsh punishment for the blasphemers.
Reading out a resolution, Waheed Muzhda, the Front’s spokesman, said: “The presence of foreign troops cannot bring peace to the country, but makes the situation even worse.”
With repeated blasphemous acts, the US forces had proved they had no respect for religious materials, the resolution said, accusing foreign soldiers of murdering innocent people in night raids, arresting them and violating Afghanistan’s sovereignty.
It also asked the government of President Hamid Karzai to halt talks with the US on the proposed strategic cooperation pact immediately.
