Shura member gunned down in Helmand

LASHKARGAH (PAN): Unidentified armed men gunned down a member of a district shura in southern Helmand province, an official said Saturday.

Mullah Abdul Salam, the member of the district council, a body who links villagers with the local government, was shot dead in his house in the Nawa district, Helmand governor's spokesman, Daud Ahmadi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

An influential tribal elder, Haji Atiqullah, warned the government of a further worse security situation in the district unless major military offensives are launched to drive militants out of the area.

Five months earlier, two other members of the council, including its leader, were assassinated by the Taliban militants in the district.

An investigation has been launched into the case, however no arrests has been made by local forces, Ahmadi added.
