Al Jazeera reporter detained in Kandahar
by Bashir Ahmad NaademonSep 22, 2010 - 12:09KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): International soldiers detained a journalist working for the Al Jazeera Television Network in southern Kandahar province, officials said on Wednesday.
Kandahar governor's spokesman, Zalmay Ayubi, said an investigation had been launched into the arrest of Muhammad Nadir. American, Canadian and British soldiers are stationed in Kandahar, but it is yet to be ascertained as to who detained the journalist.
Nadir, who has been working with the TV channel for several years, was living with his two children and wife in the Aino area of Kandahar City, the provincial capital.
His wife told Pajhwok Afghan News Afghan international forces raided their house at 3:30am and detained her spouse after blindfolding him. The soldiers allegedly searched the house and took away jewellery and cash.
Meanwhile, Kandahar-based journalists condemned the condemned the arrest and demanded Nadir's immediate release.
Two days ago, another Al Jazeera reporter, Rahmatullah Nekzad, who also worked for the American news agency Associated Press (AP), was arrested by foreign forces in southern Ghazni province.
