LASHKARGAH (PAN): Taliban fighters attacked guards working for a road construction company, killing eight and wounding another three in southern Helmand province, officials said on Monday.
The incident took place at 11pm on Sunday when Taliban attacked the guard’s checkpoint on a road linking Sangin district with Lashkargah, the provincial capital of Helmand, the governor's spokesman, Daud Ahmadi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Eight guards were killed and three others wounded, he added.
Taliban attackers also suffered casualties as the guards returned fire. Taliban took all but one of the bodies of their dead fighters, he added.
The incident may have been caused by an internal dispute among the guards, deputy police chief, Col. Kamaluddin Sherzai, said.
Nine guards were killed and two others were missing, he added.
Police have launched investigation, he added.
Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, claimed responsibility for attack. He said 14 policemen were killed.
