Afghans shot dead in Peshawar shrine attack

ISLAMABAD (PAN): Three people, including two Afghan refugees, were killed on Tuesday when gunmen opened fire at devotees at a shrine in Peshawar, capital of Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The unidentified gunmen attacked the shrine of Ghazi Baba at around 9am in the Bada Bher area on the outskirts of Peshawar, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ijaz Khan told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Two Afghan refugees were among the dead, he said, adding two people injured in the assault were transferred to hospital. However, the police officer was unaware of their condition.

They had recently received threats from the insurgents, said a custodian of the shrine, Mir Muhammad. The attack could be the handiwork of a local armed group led by Mangal Bagh, he believed.

Separately, a remote-controlled bomb was detonated in the Nagoman neighbourhood near Peshawar, as a police vehicle passed by. Policemen suffered no casualties in the explosion, police officer Kalam Khan said.
