GovernancePoll complaints: Karzai asked to name panel of judges
by Ashraf HanifionDec 23, 2010 - 19:15KABUL (PAN): A Supreme Court official said on Thursday President Hamid Karzai would appoint a judicial panel for a one-instance special court that would hear complaints about the September 18 parliamentary polls.
Two days back, the apex court requested the president to allow the establishment of a one-instance court. "Judges of the special court will also be appointed after approval from the President," said Wakil Omari, head of the publication department at the Supreme Court.
He told Pajhwok Afghan News Karzai, who agreed less than a month to go to inaugurate new parliament on January 21, was yet to approve the request.
The Attorney General's Office (AGO) has sent 232 dossiers to the Supreme Court along with 4,000 documents about fraud and election law violations.
The top court was asked to scrap final election results and order a recount of votes in the presence of an impartial commission and also bring to justice 14 election officials, who allegedly committed fraud.
"It's too early to say," Omari said in response to the question if court would be able to dispose of election-related cases within a month. Much would depend on the nature of cases, he remarked.
For its part, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) denies any wrongdoing and believes any decision on the polls results can be taken only by it.
A presidential spokesman, Siamak Herawi, confirmed receiving the Supreme Court's suggestion about the establishment of a new court. He said Karzai would decide on the proposal after returning from Turkey.
