Dec 29, 2010 - 14:41

JALALABAD (PAN): Eight Taliban fighters, including a commander, were killed an airstrike while six Pakistani militants were captured during a ground offensive in eastern Nangarhar province, officials said on Wednesday.

The two operations were carried out in Pachearagam and Sherzad districts Tuesday night, the governor's spokesman, Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Personnel from the Afghan army, police, intelligence and NATO forces took part in the operations.

The air raid was conducted in Gerikhel area of Pachearagam district. Eight insurgents were killed in the strike.

Police chief, Brig. Gen. Ali Shah Paktiawall, said the dead included a cell leader of the Taliban identified as Sayed Abdul Rahman and his deputy.

The six Pakistanis were captured in Sherzad district, Abdulzai said.
